Improving data-driven decision across products

Led an internal company study to enhance data-driven decision-making, involving 64 R&D members, identifying key challenges, and taking actionable steps to improve the process. Following a major discovery, I initiated a successful "Data Week," resulting in baseline metrics, KPIs, and significant product insights that informed future projects.

Research Overview

  • Goal: Improve product data-driven decision-making.
  • Methodology: Conducted surveys and interviews with 64 R&D members to identify key challenges in data gathering and research processes.
  • Key Findings: Major obstacles included time constraints, insufficient training, and difficulties accessing data.

Situation Analysis

Research was prioritized for high-importance projects, but most other projects lacked sufficient research.

Data Difficulty

  • Barriers: Time, efficiency, and data quality issues led employees to deprioritize research in favor of other tasks.
  • Difficulty: The majority of the R&D team found research challenging, with inconsistent and reactive efforts leading to inefficiencies in decision-making.

Challenges

        • 93% of employees who conducted research required assistance.
        • Only 30% of individuals verified that their work met its goals.
        • Teams often moved forward without validating the impact of their previous work.

Action Taken

        • Recognized that research was most effective when supported by others.
        • Organized a “Data Week” with 9 teams, blocking off calendars to focus on obtaining critical answers.
        • Prepped and coordinated teams, leading to the presentation of product findings and insights.
        • Created a conversion rate funnel to help teams understand their role in product success and guide future improvements.

Results

        • Established a baseline for a conversion rate funnel.
        • Each team identified and set 3 key performance indicators (KPIs).
        • Teams gained valuable experience in data gathering.
        • Multiple major product insights were uncovered, leading to new projects and enhancements.

Summary

By addressing key challenges through targeted actions like "Data Week," we significantly improved the team's ability to gather and analyze data. This initiative established crucial metrics and uncovered insights that will drive future innovation and maintain the company’s competitive edge.
